FDA Approves Plan B for Non-Prescription Sales
posted on 8/24/2006

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced today it has approved Plan B, commonly called the "morning-after" pill, for over-the-counter (OTC) use in women 18 years and older. Plan B is the brand name for the emergency contraceptive pill. If taken within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse, it virtually eliminates the risk of pregnancy. Plan B will continue to be available with a prescription to girls 17 years and younger, and it will only be sold without a prescription behind the counter in licensed pharmacies and through qualified health care providers. The FDA’s decision has been much anticipated, and OTC Plan B is expected to be in drugstores by the end of the year.
