FDA Approves Cervical Cancer Vaccine posted on 6/8/2006
![]() The Food and Drug Administration today approved the first-ever cervical cancer vaccine. Gardasil, manafactured by Merck, was found to be 100 percent effective in worldwide clinical trials preventing against two strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV), which account for nearly 70 percent of all cervical cancer cases. The vaccine is also approved for the prevention of genital warts.
As many as 80 percent of adults have or have had HPV. In most people, the virus comes and goes without any signs or symptoms, but for some women, if undetected and untreated, the virus can progress into cervical cancer.
Gardasil is not a replacement for the annual Pap test.
